Fully-Semi Enclosed Noise Barrier-Shanghai Rail Transit
The South Extension of Shanghai Rail Transit Line 5 is a landmark infrastructure project covering a main line of 16.63 km and an additional 3.5 km access segment. Notably, it is the first metro line in Shanghai to implement a fully enclosed sound barrier on a main operating line. This project represents the highest level of noise protection in the city’s transit history, traversing the most densely populated residential corridors along the route.

The Challenge
The project faced a convergence of extreme engineering constraints. The construction site was characterized by exceptionally narrow operational spaces, requiring high-precision logistics. Furthermore, the design had to address large structural spans and complex stress analysis while meeting stringent safety and urban landscape aesthetic requirements. As the line passes through high-density residential zones, the demand for “maximum grade” noise mitigation was paramount.
Solution
To address these multifaceted challenges, our company deployed a comprehensive, multi-layered acoustic protection strategy:
- Pioneering Full Enclosure: We engineered and installed approximately 1,300 meters of fully enclosed barriers, creating a total-seal acoustic tunnel—the first of its kind on a Shanghai main line.
- Hybrid Barrier System: The solution integrated 500 meters of semi-enclosed barriers and over 4,600 meters of vertical noise walls to adapt to varying track geometries and environmental needs.
- Advanced Internal Absorption: Over 10,000 meters of specialized in-beam sound absorption panels were installed to neutralize noise at the source within the track structure.
- Structural Excellence: Each component was designed to withstand complex structural loads while maintaining a modern architectural profile that complements Shanghai’s urban aesthetic.
Outcomes
Our company successfully delivered a massive volume of specialized noise control infrastructure for the Line 5 South Extension. Despite the confined working conditions and technical complexity, the project was completed to the highest safety and performance standards. The result is a premier acoustic shielding system that ensures the quiet operation of one of Shanghai’s most critical transit extensions, significantly enhancing the living standards for the thousands of residents along the corridor.
