Wuhan Yingwuzhou Changjiang Bridge Noise Barrier
The noise barrier project for the Wuhan Yingwuzhou Changjiang Bridge addresses essential acoustic insulation requirements for the bridge’s approach spans. This infrastructure project ensures environmental noise control for the surrounding urban areas, maintaining a balance between high-volume urban traffic and the local residential environment.

The Challenge
The project required a sophisticated acoustic solution capable of spanning long distances while adhering to strict safety and structural standards for an elevated urban expressway. The barrier needed to accommodate different site conditions on the Hanyang and Wuchang sides of the bridge, requiring robust, scalable engineering solutions.
Solution
To address these complex engineering requirements, the project implemented a specialized portal steel frame structure:
- Hanyang Side: Featured a semi-enclosed noise barrier standing 7.8 meters high. The base utilizes an innovative hinge connection method to ensure stability and structural flexibility.
- Wuchang Side: Features a fully-enclosed noise barrier standing 7 meters high, utilizing pre-embedded components and column flange connections for secure integration.
Execution and Outcomes
The project successfully delivered a high-performance acoustic barrier system with a span of 32–42 meters. With a total weight of 12.6 tons per span (the heaviest single assembled unit weighing 8 tons), this installation represented a significant milestone at the time of construction as one of the largest and most technically demanding fully-enclosed noise barriers in China. The project effectively mitigates traffic noise, ensuring improved living standards for the surrounding community.
