Metal Louvre Noise Barrier-Shenzhen Bulong Highway
The Combined Louvre and Acrylic Noise Barrier System integrates high-efficiency sound-absorbing metal louver panels with high-transparency PMMA (acrylic) acoustic sheets. Designed for high-speed expressways, elevated bridges, and urban transit corridors, this hybrid solution delivers acoustic attenuation, structural durability, and optimal natural daylighting without sacrificing urban aesthetics.

The Challenge
Urban expressway corridors running close to high-density residential and commercial developments face a dual noise mitigation conflict. Opaque metal barriers offer strong sound absorption but block natural light and driver sightlines, creating shadow zones along surrounding properties. Conversely, fully transparent barriers provide clear visibility but lack sound absorption capabilities, reflecting acoustic energy back onto multi-lane roadways. The primary challenge is engineering a balanced composite system that maximizes sound absorption at traffic level, ensures sound insulation, and maintains daylight transmission while withstanding high wind loads on elevated bridge structures.
Solution
To reconcile acoustic performance with visual openness, a hybrid louver and acrylic noise barrier structure was engineered and deployed:
- Dual-Action Composite Structure: Combines lower sound-absorbing metal louver panels with upper high-transparency PMMA (acrylic) acoustic sheets to balance sound absorption and insulation.
- Perforated Louvered Design: Integrates downward-angled metal louver slots filled with hydrophobic glass wool to trap and absorb primary tire and engine noise at vehicle height.
- UV-Stabilized Acrylic Integration: Incorporates high-impact transparent PMMA panels in the middle and upper sections to preserve natural light and maintain open urban sightlines.
- Structural Engineering: Built with heavy-duty H-steel posts and internal horizontal reinforcing bars inside the acrylic panels to ensure wind resistance and anti-shatter safety
Execution and Outcomes
The deployment of the Combined Louvre and Acrylic Noise Barrier System successfully delivers comprehensive acoustic protection across complex urban transit routes. By combining sound-absorbing louvers with light-transmitting acrylic panels, the installation achieves optimal noise reduction for nearby residents, reduces glare for drivers, and maintains a clean visual aesthetic along major transportation infrastructure.
