Bridge Wind Barrier Project-Shanghai

The Shanghai Xupu Bridge is one of Shanghai’s major urban cross-river bridge infrastructures, serving as an important transportation corridor across the Huangpu River. To improve driving safety and operational stability under bridge wind conditions, the project incorporated a dedicated bridge wind barrier system along the main bridge section.

The overall wind barrier arrangement consisted of three-row wind barrier systems installed along both sides of the concrete guardrails between the two main bridge towers, with a spacing interval of 1.5 meters.

Installation completed in October 2016. The project adopted a curved-slot wind barrier configuration, covering approximately 1,000 meters of bridge infrastructure.

The Challenge

The Shanghai Xupu Bridge project required a wind barrier system capable of improving vehicle operational safety under urban bridge wind environments while maintaining long-term durability and stable structural performance.

As a major urban river-crossing bridge, the project demanded reliable aerodynamic protection combined with durable weather-resistant materials capable of long-term outdoor service under atmospheric exposure conditions.

The curved-slot wind barrier system was specifically engineered to provide:

  • Stable aerodynamic performance for bridge traffic safety
  • Effective reduction of side-wind impact on vehicles
  • Long-term resistance to UV radiation and atmospheric aging
  • High structural stability and impact resistance
  • Excellent optical transparency and environmental durability
  • Minimum service life of 20 years
  • UV protective coating thickness not less than 70 μm

The project adopted high-performance polycarbonate (PC) solid sheet material to ensure reliable long-term operational performance under urban bridge environmental conditions.

Technical Features

Urban Bridge Wind Protection – The curved-slot wind barrier configuration improved vehicle driving stability and reduced wind impact along the bridge deck section between the main towers.

Long-Term Weather Durability – The polycarbonate wind barrier system delivered excellent resistance against UV exposure, environmental aging, and long-term atmospheric conditions.

High Optical Transparency – The PC wind barrier panels maintained high light transmission while minimizing long-term yellowing and optical degradation.

Reliable Structural Performance  – The wind barrier system provided stable mechanical performance, impact resistance, and long-term operational reliability suitable for bridge infrastructure applications.

Execution and Outcomes

The successful completion of the Shanghai Xupu Bridge Wind Barrier Project demonstrated the effectiveness of polycarbonate wind barrier systems in improving vehicle operational safety and aerodynamic performance for large urban bridge infrastructure.

The project further validated the long-term reliability and environmental durability of curved-slot PC wind barrier technology in demanding urban transportation environments.
